Hydra House submission guidelines

hydra-house-logo-75pxHydra House is a Seattle-based micropress looking to publish its first novel or novels. To date, we have published just over a half dozen books in softcover, hardcover, and ebook format, generating a Nebula nomination and working with award-winning editor Ellen Datlow.

We currently accepting novel-length proposals for manuscripts 60,000-120,000 words in length. We’re looking for original speculative fiction novels that lean toward fantasy with a modern, edgy sensibility. Think Ted Chiang, N.K. Jemisin, Andy Duncan, Kij Johnson, or Graham Joyce. Something not too science fiction but not steampunk¬†or epic fantasy. Definitely not zombies or vampires. Urban fantasy will be considered, but with a different take. We’re looking for good, solid writing and storytelling.

Because we’re a small, broke press, payment will come in the form of a 50/50 royalty split, paid twice per year. And, of course, copies of the book. What we don’t pay up front we prefer to spend on copyediting and a nice cover, as well as basic marketing. We take first North American rights for print books and worldwide rights for ebooks, for a term of three years.

Submit your manuscript using our online form. You should submit at least three chapters, but we prefer to see the whole manuscript.

Please keep your Letter of Inquiry brief. Summaries are not necessary. We will do our best to respond to you within 90  days.
